Fishing Bird

Poem by Joey Wańczyk

The drone of waves mutes

Your open mouth and the fish

Struggling for life inside it.

Crimson gills opening

For an intake of salted water,

Caving into nothing.

Still, you scan the top of the ocean

For bigger prey you can’t swallow.

I still share that same desire.

Let it dive back into the sea.

How long can you hold your breath,

Flash of silver moving away,

Before you are caught again

In the mouth of somebody else?
