Issues Residency FAQ

Who Should Apply

What is experience level required? (i.e. do I need to have made a zine before? Do I need any graphic design skills? Published writing credentials?)

While having a history with small publication and an understanding of graphic design strengthens your submission, we consider all levels of experience.

Do I have to identify as LGBTQ to apply?

In short, yes. The Issues was created to provide a platform to LGBTQ people interested in publishing, however we are still open to hearing your concept if it revolves around a queer subject.

Do I have to be based in NYC, or even the US?

Definitely not. We encourage anyone around the world to apply!

Can I work as a part of a team?

Absolutely, team work equals dream work.

Content

Is there a theme?

We are open to all submissions with no limitation to a specific topic at this time. However, your specific project should have clear focus and motivation.

How to Apply

What is the application process like?

After filling out the application form, the Hello Mr. editors and Issues mentors will grade each submissions and the winner will be notified on or after November 15, 2017.

Can I submit more than one idea?

Due to the volume of submissions, it’s best to focus on one idea.

I have a really great idea but it deserves to be pitched physically, can I mail you in my mockups and idea?

We'd love to help keep the postal service alive, but we are not accepting physical submissions, so please be as descriptive and concise in your application as possible.

If I got rejected can I have some feedback as to what I can do better?

Unfortunately, we do not have the capacity to respond to each individual submission at this time.

If I’m Selected

What type of help is Hello Mr. going to give to me?

Hello Mr. will provide you/your team with mentors considered experts in their community, space in the next issue, and direct one on one guidance throughout your magazine production process. Other resources to be announced.

How much time should I expect to spend every week on the zine?

We recommend reserving 15 hours a week to commit to this project. Other work and school comes first, but please be mindful that three months is a very short amount of time to produce the pilot of magazine, and we expect you to be respectful and organized with your use of time.

How many people will get to see my zine? Will it be available in print and online?

Your zine will be published in every print copy of the new issue. It is up to you to publish your content online via your own digital outlets.

Do I still maintain the rights to my original idea after Hello Mr?

Yes, consider Hello Mr. more as a mentorship relationship compared to that of a “parent-company”
